Volunteers from the organization LA on Cloud 9, which helps the homeless of Los Angeles and their pets, saw a puppy sitting on a discarded potato chip bag, trying to survive in a shallow part of the LA River.

They contacted Hope for Paws, a non-profit animal rescue organization, for help.

Onlookers reported that a homeless man attacked the puppy—strangling him, cutting off one of his legs, and then throwing him 30 feet down into the river. The puppy had spent two days in there before Hope for Paws rescued him.

Animal workers climbed down and approached the puppy, who didn’t move much. He whined when a volunteer gently touched him, an indication that he was in pain.

They named the puppy Jordan on the way to the vet, who immediately attended to his needs. In addition to an amputated leg, Jordan was suffering from malnutrition, bacterial infection, and mange.

Doctors say it was a miracle that Jordan lived through that ordeal. He received a good, long shower and a blood transfusion, and on the fourth day after he was rescued, he was healthy enough to undergo surgery to correct his botched amputation.

A few days later, Jordan went to his new foster home, where his foster mom and his fur friends showered him with love. Two weeks later, when his stitches had to be removed, Jordan behaved like a good little boy and was rewarded with treats.

Jordan underwent physical therapy, so he could get stronger. However, he doesn’t even seem to be aware that one of his legs is missing—he frolics and runs around like any rambunctious puppy!

Now, Jordan has found his forever home. Together with several fur brothers and sisters, he basks in the warmth and care of the lovely family who adopted him.
