In as much as dogs are man’s best friend, it gets to a point when they won’t shut up. When this is the case, you get so distressed and disgusted. This gets very aggravating when the dog is barking all night long. You can’t get quality sleep and that annoys many people. However, don’t despair because there’s a solution to this problem. There are several things that you can do to claim your peace of mind.
Contact your neighbor
It’s obvious that the first thing that you should do is to address the neighbor before you take any action. In some cases, you might find that they were not conscious of the fact that their dog was excessively barking. This might happen when they’ve gone to work, or maybe they’re cognizant of the problem and they’re addressing it.
That’s why you need to give them the benefit of doubt. In case you make accusations, this will just make the matter even worse. You need to address the matter face to face. Just be bold enough to talk to them in person. You can as well use the opportunity to know them.
If you nudge them in the right direction, they’ll obviously do something about it.
Block the dog’s vision
Maybe the dog barks every time you make your way into your backyard. If that’s the case, you want to block its vision. Chances are that the dog is trying to safeguard its territory. When the dog can’t see you, there’s no danger involved.
This can also be solved by having a fence screen. This will bring in the element of privacy on your property. In some cases, it could be the mere sound of you moving into your yard, or maybe the smell.
Understand that the only reason that a dog barks at you is that it feels threatened. According to a renowned dog trainer, Jen DeHaan, you need to befriend the dog. You can do this by asking your neighbor politely as to whether you can meet their dog and play with them.
The idea is to get the dog used to your scent and presence. It’s much better to have your neighbor bring the dog to your yard. This will orient them to the property and the smell around it.
We all know that food is a great way to get to a dog’s heart. However, you don’t want to feed another person’s dog without their permission.
Consider filing a formal noise complaint
If all the above strategies fail to yield results, the next thing you want to do is to file a formal complaint. You can do this with your landlord, animal control, police, or homeowners association.
This is based on the fact that a noisy pet violates the provisions and terms of the apartment leases. The agreements provided by the homeowners association also condemn such behavior. This is especially the case if the barking takes place at night when plenty of people are asleep and the barking is a disturbance.
